Faith and Fear

Faith and Fear

by Gary A. Fellows

If Faith and Fear are all that's left -

Of other choices you're bereft -

Then Fear is what instinctively

Your mind would choose, since you can't see

Beyond the present here and now.

Escape you'd want, but where and how

Are answers no one can provide.

You haven't any place to hide.

The facts seem altogether clear:

You must succumb to faithless Fear.

Yet Faith still beckons you with hope.

Although you cannot see the scope

Of what's ahead you've yet to face,

Still Faith alone can take the place

Of Fear no matter what its size.

You can't depend on ears and eyes,

Says Faith, but trust that God is good

That He will show you how you should

Approach whatever lies ahead

Without the fetters Fear and Dread,

For He'll be there to strengthen you

When you believe that's what He'll do.

With forceful shove and evil grin

Fear demands that you give in.

Faith declares no matter what

The mighty hands of God have got

The then and now and future, too

Secured for what is best for you.

It's even said that somewhere yonder -

A thought for you and I to ponder -

Where God abides forevermore

Your name in gold is on a door

Reserved for you, a place He'll give

For you in joy and love to live

Throughout the vast eternity.

This promise is for all.  It's free.

But not alone for far-off then:

His care is real for now and when

You feel inclined to be distressed.

When Fear will put you to the test

It's Faith that whispers loud and clear:

Hold on to Me; let go of Fear

For God is greater, stronger than

All other forces known to man.

In simple trust that He knows best,

Give all to Him.  He'll give you rest

And peace of mind to make you strong

To face all fears when all goes wrong.

He'll even give your soul a song

For you to sing your whole life long.

While Fear's a coward, Faith is bold.

The two at once you cannot hold.

It's Fear or Faith.  You have to choose.

With one you win.  With one you lose.
