Trial & Error

I just returned from a long weekend in Florida to visit my father.  The timing was right! I missed a snowstorm up north and at the same time experienced marvelous weather down south.  I biked and swam each of the three days I was there. I texted my kids, “I hit the jackpot!”

It was a short trip, but I felt I got a lot out of it! Why do we milk more out of life when the days are numbered?  A friend of mine who lives on a lake within a large city’s limits says there is much less boating on her lake on the weekend than you might expect.

Why?  There is always mañana to water-ski or swim.  A sports game you want to see at 2 p.m.? A luncheon to attend or a grocery store run to accomplish?  The swim or boat ride gets pushed off to mañana.  In comparison, another friend who lives on a lake in “tourist country” tells me that it’s filled with boaters every weekend Memorial Day to Labor Day. This second lake is located less than 20 miles from the first.

The psalm of Moses says, “Teach us to number our days aright that we may gain a heart of wisdom.” Psalm 90:12.  If exercise is a priority on vacation, why shouldn’t it be a priority in our daily lives? If sunshine improves your mood, take a walk at lunch tomorrow.  Need to open your Bible more? Schedule a time!

Wisdom comes to most of us through trial and error. Why not shout out your own psalm to God as you try and err?
